Questions

Questions founders and creators ask first

Short answers. For your own matter, write to us.

Which kind of protection do I need?

It depends on what you made. Names and logos are trademarks; songs, images, writing and code are copyrights; how a product looks or works can be a patent. Many products need two of them. We’ll tell you which at the first meeting.

How are fees set?

Each step has a flat fee, quoted in writing before we start. Government filing fees are extra and passed on at cost. Disputes are billed by the hour, with an estimate first.

Is the first meeting free?

The first thirty-minute meeting is free. It ends with our view of what to do and what it would cost.

Do you work with clients outside Los Angeles?

Yes. Federal trademark, copyright and patent filings don’t depend on where you live, and most of our meetings are by video.

Do I need an NDA before I tell you about an invention?

No. A lawyer must keep a client’s confidences, and that duty starts at the first meeting. Still, save the details for the meeting rather than the contact form.

How long does a registration take?

Months, not weeks, and the offices set the pace. We tell you the current wait when we file and write when anything changes.

Can you guarantee the registration or the patent?

No one can. Examiners at each office decide every application. What we can do is tell you, before you pay a filing fee, how likely an objection is.

What if someone has already copied me?

Send us what you’ve found. We tell you whether a notice, a letter, a negotiation or nothing at all is the right first step.
